About EcoBooks

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) Club is a student teacher club at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. Initially, we were formed to serve only the BSc community. However, over the years, we have found ourselves extending our services and activities to the BSc community and beyond. Today, the club consists of members from all walks of life – BSc (Bachelor of Science) students, BA (Bachelor of Arts) students and even PGDE (Post-graduate Degree) and Dip. Ed (Diploma in Education) students. With a greater diversity, we feel a greater desire to commit ourselves to improving the needs of the NIE community.
Over the years, we found many cash-strapped student teachers having a hard time finding juniors to sell their old and used textbooks, which will no doubt be of more use to them. As such, we have developed a one hit facility to enable you to go straight to the books you are looking for. We hope that with such service, we can do our bit to improve your student life so that buying and selling your 2nd hand textbooks would be a breeze.

History

Bachelor of Arts (BA) & Bachelor of Science (BSc) Clubs come together to form Orientation Planning Main Committee (OPMC) 2009 for BA/BSc Freshmen Orientation Camp (FOC) 2009.

In lieu to the heavy costs incurred, OPMC 2009 decided to earn extra revenue to cover its deficit. In May 2009, The committee came up with a BA/BSc 2nd Hand Book Sale. The plans did not came into realization due to the flu crisis situation in Summer 2009.  Eventually, the one-time event has been shelved for further planning.

In October 2009 when it was the early planning stage for BSc Club EXCO 09/10, Alex Lim (Head of Dive and Discover Expedition) raised up the issue to ease the congestion of queues at the Campus Book Centre (located at Canteen). He wanted to revive the plans for BA/BSc 2nd Hand Book Sale and use it as a fund-raising revenue for Dive and Discover. Initially BSc Club EXCO managed to grab hold of the Facebook group admin and rename it to BSc 2nd Hand Book Sale. However, the crew had paperwork to be processed and were shorthanded. Therefore, it had been put to further planning.

In February 2010, a couple of junior members in BSc Club came together to put up a proposal to revolutionize BSc 2nd Hand Book Sale. They wanted to change the sale to an ongoing movement which will constantly remind the NIE Community to be socially responsible of their reference books. By directing their movement towards the Green side, they renamed the event to The EcoBooks Movement.

In March 2010, the Movement officially was launched with 4 executive members and 6 sub-committee members.

In September 2010, EcoBooks Movement has sold 30 books ever since the start of their movement! More NIE students are also starting to bring in their books to sell!
